Question

Computer will not boot windows after initial BIOS

Sep 14, 2016 1:13PM PDT

Hi guys,

I recently changed the motherboard of my computer as the previous one was fried. After installing windows everything seemed to work normal. Although, the PSU was not sufficient to accommodate the computer during heavy use.

Following this I changed my PSU to a Coolermaster Thunder 450w.

When I assembled everything, the computer fails to boot. It initially starts up the bios and after I proceed to boot windows, it tells me that there is an error starting windows and asks me to restart. After that the computer repeatedly powers on and off and there is no display on the screen. The keyboard also stops receiving power as no LED lights are on and I cannot enter BIOS.

What should I do?

My specs are
Motherboard: msi h61m-p31/w8
GPU: Nvidia GTX 555
PSU: CoolerMaster Thunder 450w

Note: I have already tried resetting the CMOS and I can enter BIOS for the first time after that but then it enters the same state where the computer is running with power but completely powers off with no display.

Answer
Since you changed the motherboard.

I'd unplug the HDD so the next time you can get into the BIOS. I had a similar issue at the shop and the causes were varied. One time it was the owner had reused the RAM and it turned out to be incompatible. The next time it was the out of date BIOS and the next I had to load the BIOS defaults then reinstall Windows due to the BIOS changes.

And let's not forget about a not common other setting. Here's a link. https://www.google.com/search?q=windows+10+disable+faststart

I don't see where you tried Safe Mode so to save yourself time, try Safe Mode and change fast start.

I can't access windows

So I've been tinkering and the computer only turns on after CMOS reset. After I save changes and restart it doesn't work anymore. Any type of restart will cause the computer to turn on as in the fans spin and there is sound but there is no display and the USB ports do not channel power.

If I try and boot windows from my HDD it starts automatically repairing then restarts but if it restarts it goes into the same pseudo-on state.

No display and

the USB ports do not channel power. ?

Maybe I read this wrong but if that's so, how do you ever try again? I guess you are powering off then on.

This sounds more and more like a blown OS or hardware issue. Since I can wipe the drive and start over, for me that's no big deal.

BUT I can't see where you wrote a word about Safe Mode and tests without that HDD. I use those Live CD and USB to do that. Read my old advice at http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

I'll try but

After the CMOS reset I cannot use or access anything on the computer.

Also, sorry but I don't quite understand how to get into safe mode without your HDD successfully booting windows. I'll look into it but I'm quite new to this.

Two ideas here.

1. If you are telling me the OS is blown on the HDD, I can test the machine without a HDD.

2. If you can see W10 begin to boot it has safe mode to try. I've used that mode to turn off fast start and work it from that angle.

Here's the confusion. I gave you more than one way to pick this problem apart.

Neither work.

1. I've tried testing without HDD and it still only works after CMOS reset.

2. I cannot see windows 10, but I took out the CMOS overnight so I will try to see how far I can get now. Will keep you updated.

That's telling us it's not a Windows issue.

Time to work with your machine's maker on what they want to do next.

Your psu is a split rail unit and it's a little light.

Your gpu is a 150w unit and it requires two 6 pin connectors.
Your psu only has one 6 pin connector.
Where did you get the second 6 pin connector?

The PSU has two 6 pins actually the GPU only needs one 6 pin port.

The PSU has 6 + another 2. But this GPU only needs 1 six pin power.

If it did work and the only thing you did was change the psu put the old psu back in the machine and test.
