computer will not boot

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 model# DLV3L51 that I'm trying to help a friend with. It will not do anything past the windows xp screen--just a black screen and mouse arrow. Help please.

Hi....I have the same PC. Do you have the original setup & diagnostic cds + the manual ?? if so start reading & identifying from the diagnostic tree what area your problem falls into...then follow the steps...
Dells self help I have found to be rather useful in getting to grips with my PC problems....slow but sure diagnostic analysis will get you there quicker in the end. Good luck "Sherlock"

Re: "past the windows xp screen" ...

and please tell us WHAT SCREEN that would be? There is a Windows screen shown during boot that is different than the Windows screen for login which in turn is different from the Windows screen during login, which is different that the Windows screen that eventually shows up after logging in and arriving at the individualized desktop - which do you reference?

If you are managing to log in before getting the black screen what happens when you press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys? If you get the Task Manager make use of it to start explorer.exe

If you aren't getting to the login screen have you tried Safe Mode?

You have to help us help you by providing some DETAILS about the problem.
