Computer went dead

by grandpaw7 / June 20, 2004 8:53 AM PDT

I waas installing a Canon scanner. I downloaded the software from the CD. Then, per instructions, I connected the scanner to the computer via the USB port. Just as I plugged it in, my computer went dead and I can't revive it. While I suppose my next step is the computer hospital, I thought I'd post this to see if anyone knows of any magic I might try. Thanks, grandpaw

Hi Grandpaw:
Did you try to unplug the scanner and reboot the computer?
If it will reboot, don't plug the scanner in while powered up. Turn off the computer, plug in the scanner, then reboot.

1. try and re-install your OS. this normally fixes everything.2. If your PC does not respond to a new install.. or does not power up.. then first replace the powersupply. Dude if all else fails.. bunnie computers. More power to you! they can help you. find em on google

Something like this happened to me the first time I tried to plug in my USB flash drive.

Try unplugging the power cable for about 5 seconds or so, then plugging it back in and turning the computer back on. I'd bet a static charge traveled up the USB port and tripped a failsafe in the power supply, and you need to reset the power supply by pulling the plug (ATX power supplies are always drawing a 5V supply of standby power, even when the system is switched off).

As stated, remove the USB connection, and reboot. If all is well, then possibly your cable is miswired, which I have never run across, but anything is possible.
Otherwise, take that scanner right back, and make them show you that it works.
And make sure your power supply is not running on the edge. Sometimes just a bit more power drain will knock out the whole thing.

This is to all of you great people: while the computer wouldn't boot up with the scanner unplugged, it did start up after I unplugged it and replugged it. I'll wait till tomorrow to plug the scanner back in with the computer shut down and then boot up to see what happens. That's enough excitement for today. Again, thanks, grandpaw

Just to report that after I resusictated my computer, per the advise I got, I hooked up the scanner while the computer was off. When I turned it on, no problem. And no problem when I boot up anew. Thanks. grandpaw

Hi Grandpaw7:
Happy to hear that all is well with the scanner. Some USB devices, (scanners, cameras, etc.)need to be detected by the computer during the boot process, before they will work properly.
Keep that in mind when you attach your camera.
Thanks for posting back.

Good Luck
