Computer useless after disabling some startup items

I have an HP 6120 n running Vista. I saw a 'tip' here yesterday to select the Run feature in Vista and ran msconfig. I chose the startup tab and unchecked some boxes such as aol. I figured this may be the problem, as it happened on the next bootup. I also unchecked a box called kbd, which I thought was the feature that highlighted the caps lock key, etc in the systray. It's still there, so I guess it has to do with something else.
Anyway, the computer is useless now. When I click on anything, an hourglass shows up for a few seconds, then nothing. This is a business machine and I need to get it up and running VERY quickly. Any help appreciated.

Have you tried

rebooting the PC and then boot up in safe mode and select the system restore to the day before you made the change to see if it fixes it?

Be a little more careful. Write down the names of any entries if you do not know for sure what they are, and research them using your favorite search engine. Be sure to spell them exactly the same, because if you're even one letter off it can get you the wrong results.

Any entries that are not obvious to you should be treated with care. Disable them one at a time, and give yourself a chance to check out the results before moving on to the next one. This way you can easily detect which ones are essential.

Restored

I ended up restoring this thing to a couple of days earlier. Fixed it. I only disabled innocuous things like AOL from starting up. Not sure yet what actually happened.
