Computer turns on when telephone rings

Nov 23, 2004 6:51AM PST

I'm running Windows XP home and when the phone rings while the computer is off the computer comes back on. I believe it has something to do with the modom softV92 data fax modem. However am not sure. have not been able to find any reason for why it would happen and would appreciate any help

Some BIOS have a WAKE ON RING setting. Turn it off.

I'd tell a bit more, but no make or model was provided in your post.

" LAN Card Wake Up / Internal Modem Ring Wake-Up headers"

Apparently this board has a hardware connection for this. You'll need to read the manual.

I found it under IRQ/Event activity detect and it was disabled however powerOn by PCI card was enabled and after referring to the manual it states it should be enabled, i disabled it and so far it has not powered on, time will tell however, so for the mean time i think the problem is solved

Thanks for all your help Bob

I don't suppose you have Answer Phone software installed on your computer do you?

On mine, it is called Classic Phone Tools and although I haven't used it much, when I did, I noticed that when the phone rang and my computer was in screensaver mode, it would pop out of the screensaver back to the desktop.

When you say your computer is off, do you mean switched off, or just in stand-by mode?

Just a thought

No i don't have any answer phone software installed and the computer has gone through a normal shutdown so is off, not in standby or screensaver going

Out of curiosity, do you have a phone connected to the same jack point as your modem?
This may give problems with incoming calls activating your PC back through the modem.
A double jack adapter with phone and modem on the same jackpoint may also slow down your internet modem speed.

My parents have the same problem with their computer. Have you received a fix for the issue.
