Question

computer switches monitor port on bootup

Mar 29, 2012 4:07AM PDT

When I shutdown and reboot sometimes my computer "finds" the other monitor port and then I have to unplug the monitor cable and plug it in to the other port. When I do this, the graphics card does not work properly so the screen quality is low. I have to then restart and quickly switch the cable back to it's original port -if I'm lucky, it will be recognized and all is ok. It's a problem in that I have to crawl under my desk each time this happens and I never know if it will "take" on the first try. Please advise how I can identify which port is which and then disable the one I do not use.

Answer
That's a known bug in some systems.

I've seen this for years and the maker of the PC needs to be told about it so they can fix it or suggest changing the BIOS to which primary monitor should be used.

I can't offer more than this because of the lack of details but it is known to me at a very low level since I had to solve this on some embedded PCs years ago.

Primary Port question
Mar 29, 2012 6:11AM PDT

How do I detect which port is the one currently being used?

Thanks for your quick response.

Sadly I can't offer much.

I had hoped a subtle hint about lack of details could help and also the hint about changing the BIOS primary display setting would have you try that.

But my hints appear to be too subtle. It could be something else entirely like a dodgy video cable, old monitor or failing video card. But the details are far too slim. If these details are not available I suggest you take it to the place that does your PC repairs.
