Answer
Heat problem maybe?

Your computer could be getting too hot. Download SpeedFan and check the temps. If the cores are under 50 degrees C, you're OK, over 65 is a problem, in between bears watching.
When checking for viruses note that some viruses can hide themselves from your antivirus program in normal mode, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode when you first power up, hit F8 about once a second until you get the menu and select Safe Mode. Then run a full system scan.

Good luck.

You can try SFC
Dec 3, 2012 1:31AM PST

You can check for corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above doesn't help. Click START, then type CMD in the search box, right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator. Then from the command prompt type sfc /scannow.

The member finally broke down and replaced the heat sink compound. You also find machines that the temp reads fine but still locks up. Lesson? Forget the temp and do the work.

I wish the machine in question had a make, model, age and some history. Even a failing hard drive can cause this but the time frame brings me back to the usual work.
