This has happned to me and when you restart you should get a message from MS to send report on a serious system fault. They send back a diagnose which usually is a hardware driver fault. Then you have a link to update your WindowsXP.
Try with NUtilities and fixing your registry. See if you have recently installed new software and try system restore.
Even leaving a cd in the drive can sometimes cause this shut down. Last but not least scan for worms. I found two even though I have Norton Antivirus. There is no definate cause but you have to try these cures?

1. Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be of much help:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

2. For information concerning the error, "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" in WinXP, consult these articles.

3. Typically, when you receive a STOP error and you're armed with the information such as "stop 0x000000D1", access this link and enter it in the uppermost search window on the left side, and then press Enter.
