Computer shuts down on bootup!!!

by lilolelady / September 18, 2004 1:47 AM PDT

This post is for a friend of mine who has an HP 503W with 128 meg of ram. Recently after her son installed a game called "Hello Kitty", she started having problems with her pc. Figuring it was the game they had installed, she uninstalled it. However, it did not do a complete uninstall, so she just did a system restore through Windows XP. Now, her computer will boot up as far as the icons appearing on the desktop and then it tries to access the CD drive and then the screen just goes black. She has to turn it off and back on and then it is the same thing all over again. What could be the cause of her trouble? What could I do to check for what could be causing her problem? She swears she is gonna take a sledge hammer to!

First check that a CD is not in the device.

If not then...

On boot press the F8 key repeatedly. This will bring up a boot option menu. Use the arrow keys to select safe mode. Press the Enter key. At prompt click OK to safe mode message.

Click on start -> run, Type in "msconfig" ,without quotes, Click OK

Click on Start up tab, look for any reference to "Hello Kitty". Uncheck box -> click apply -> OK. On prompt click "restart".

If boot to windows is sucessful install Hello Kitty then uninstall to completly remove application. If system does not boot go back to safe mode for install and uninstall of application.

On a final note, 128MB ram for XP is below minumn to operate your system properly. 256MB of ram are needed. If you have fallen prey to Ad-Supported Application that makes your web search better, finds coupons and offers, watches your system memory and preformace, contests, ect your system is gummed up. and will run even slower.
