Computer shuts down in the middle of browsing & Word docs

Nov 5, 2008 11:46AM PST

I have had my computer cycle and shut down many times, and usually it was due to two conflicting anti-virus and spyware software running at the same time, like McAfee Anti-Virus and Webroot Spyware.

Am now using AVG free, and find it good for all my needs, except that I must do a manual computer scan to catch malware and spyware warnings, some of which should have been caught.

Out of the blue, with ONLY AVG running, in the middle of typing Word documents, or even surfing the web, the PC begins to cycle for 15 - 20 seconds and then shuts down. It starts right up, and runs many hours with no problem, then all of a sudden, the cycling starts again, and down it goes.

Any ideas? I have checked for automatic downloads that may conflict with Windows vista, and have checked the Windows site to be sure I have all the needed security downloads on board.

I can do a system restore moving back to a recent check point, but before I do this, I wondered if anyone else has had a similar situation.

Just a thought.......

did you have a look in the Event Viewer?

Device Manager??

Marianna:

Do you mean the event viewer inside the Device Manager? If so, what would you look for?

Great idea, and I just plain forgot to look there.

Administrative Tools not Device Manager

OOPS! I meant to say the Administrative tools, not the Device Manager.

You can find it.........

There are a few different ways that you can open the Event Viewer in Vista. You can find it in the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel or off the Start Menu.

Understanding errors - source & task category information/
Nov 6, 2008 3:24AM PST

Marianna:

I hate to admit my lack of understanding, but once in the event viewer, how does one make sense of the errors, their source, and then what to do about the task category description?

What I am saying now is, "how can I determine if what I see needs to be corrected, or changed?"

I have been reading a long set of posts from a forum about the event viewer with many notes by Proffit, but after reading many of the messages, I still cannot determine what should be done, or how to do it?

Thanks for checking back and all your help.

If I need to read more first, before I attempt to change something, then just point me, and I will do my research.

I am reading the information at the link you sent me. There is a lot to digest, but well worth my time.

Sometimes it's not the event that matters.
Nov 6, 2008 3:35AM PST

I know this system is terrible where you find EventID 3022 and ask "How do I fix that?" because there is no direct connection from many events and what to do next.

To make it more fun (?) sometimes we don't fix the items in the event viewer since we don't have anything failing besides the message.

OK, what about YOUR ISSUE? On the surface it sounds just like a few recent machines I worked on. They had reloaded the OS many times and were at the end of that rope you hear about. For them the fix was surprisingly simple (once you know). We took the cover off and dusted out the machine and hit the heatsinks with canned air. But a few were home builds so we took off the CPU heatsink and put a few more drops of heatsink compound on. A few machines had none. The maker's answer was they thought it was optional.

We also see this on the machines with bad caps, weak power supplies and the list doesn't end.

WHY it seems confusing is that many times we have to go back and forth to build up the story and along the way we'll try this or that. Many times we get lucky.

OS versus dirt on the heatsink?
Nov 6, 2008 3:58AM PST

Hey, Bob, thanks for the reply.

I cannot read the Event Viewer to know what to fix, but many of the error lines say:

Does this information help to target a fix?

Maybe I need to read the information at the following link sent to me by Marianna:

On the surface it looks to me like...
Nov 6, 2008 4:58AM PST

You were trying to run some older pre-Vista software.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc727005.aspx seems to verify that.

As we suspected this code does not tell you exactly what to do next. However it does tells us that something happened prior to this message. This is where you tell more.

Older Pre-Vista Software?????
Nov 6, 2008 9:19AM PST

Bob, for the life of me, I cannot remember running any pre-vista software, nor can I remember trying to upgrade any software.

I will continue to wrack my brain to see if I can remember anything happening, or that I did to download any pre-vista software.

Any suggestions as to what these might be?

Thanks, Thomboy

Sorry, Bob, but now I am really lost.

Is there a forum at CNET with HIJACKTHIS information I can read, or should I do a GOOGLE to locate HIJACKTHIS information?

I bet you think I am a real bonehead...

Trend Micro HiJackThis version 2.0.2
Nov 6, 2008 12:26PM PST

OK, Bob, I can see I have my work cut out for me. I don't have a lot of time to read with work, but I will read as much as I can to come up to speed.

Ah, yes, looking under the hood. It reminds me of the old days when we put Caddy engines in 39 Fords, with LaSalle trannys. Talk about smoking tires....

Maybe Trend Micros HiJackThis version 2.0.2 is that Caddy engine.

Thanks, Thomboy
