Computer Shut Down

Jun 7, 2004 9:22PM PDT

I have a Compaq 5465 with a Celeron 475 processor running Win98SE. Often when trying to shut down, the computer hangs and the power has to be shut down then the computer restarted resulting in 'scan disk' having to run before boot-up to the desktop. Does Microsoft have a web site where troubleshooting is available? Any suggestions on resolving this issue?
Thanks for your help.

Win98SE Shutdown Patch Concerns

The patch is designed to correct one of the most common complaints about Win98SE---Slow shutdowns, or hangs at shutdown.

The simplest
thing is to type MSCONFIG.EXE on your Win98 machine's Start
menu's command line. Then, on MSconfig's General tab, click
the Advanced button, and check "disable fast shutdown."
If you're running Win98SE, you can grab the patch at

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp

The patch adds new VxDs and DLLs to your system and updates
or adds INF files But here's the kicker: The patch also
gives you a new version of Msconfig. That version is nearly
identical to the old version, except that it does not offer
the "Disable Fast Shutdown" option.

The patch is a one-way trip--- once
you install it, you're locked in to using it, and the new
versions of the applets , DLLs , etc. it installs.

Thanks Toni for the heads up about using the patch and its consequences. I followed your instructions re: msconfig and clicked the advanced button on the general tab. However, there wasn't a "disable fast shutdown" option! I'm running Win98SE. Other than being locked in to using the new versions of the applets, DLLs, etc. it installs is there really a down side if the patch corrects the shut down problem?
Thanks again.

successfully a number of times without any adverse consequences. Hopefully it will help you also.

If it doesn't, I would check in Control Panel/Sounds and look at the sound icon for 'shutting down or closing windows' and choose NONE to see if that file is hanging you up because it's corrupt. It has happened before.
