Computer Security issues with wireless networks

May 11, 2004 1:10PM PDT

I recently saw a news report that showed just how easy it is for hackers to drive by someone's house that uses wireless connections and steal personnal information stored on their computer for Identy Theft. Although I do not have wireless connections for the computers my husband wants to use wireless keyboards. My question is, can this also lead to a security problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

RC,

The "Drive-By" article was probably discussing wireless internet connections and such.

If you're just talking about Wireless Keyboards, their range is limited but there is a slight risk if someone is extremely close. Click on the link and read a discussion about the issue:

Wireless Keyboard/Mouse - Security Threat?

Hope this helps.

The keyboard isn't a blatent risk. In one of my former electronic designs I had the good fortune to dive into and use the chips that are used by many in their car remotes. The keyfob that lets you unlock/lock your doors...

This level of security is good enough that we trust our car security to it. And it's what's in the wireless mouse and keyboards from the models I've seen.

The security is set by that learn, pairing or reset buttons on the devices. The secrets are only paired up during that time.

WiFi on the other hand reveals its secrets all the time. Its partially a result of government export controls on encryption so I don't expect airtight WiFi security any day soon. Pun intended.
