Computer problems! Please help!

Nov 25, 2003 3:13AM PST

I was just using my computer like usual last night, not doing anything out of the ordinary, had maybe 3 apps open. Out of nowhere it it freezes and completely shuts down. I tried to turn it back on after that but now it won't even turn on at all. When I try to turn it on I just get one long beep then two very short fast beeps and that's it, no display on the monitor or anything like that. After it froze, the monitor smelled like it was burning (it's a pretty old monitor) I'm not sure if this is at all related to what is wrong with the computer, I tried hooking up a different monitor (one that i know works) but that didn't help any. I've since tried removing the video card and booting it up like that, I heard identical beeps without the video as with it in. I've also thoroughly cleaned the whole computer and checked all connections. Thank you in advance for any help.

My PC specs:
Windows XP Pro

GeForce 4 ti4200

What spare parts do you have to work with?
Nov 25, 2003 3:19AM PST

Most people don't have spare parts and get to take such a machine to a repair shop so they can sniff out what part is gone.

If you insist on repairing it yourself, it's time to buy the parts you think it is and move forward.

Posting this in multiple forums and repeating the same post will likely just make people wonder if you lost track of former discussions.

The reason I've posted it on multiple forums is because I wasn't sure which forum I would get the best help from. And now it says "No more replies will be allowed" on the one I originally posted.

And as far as swapping with other parts, do I need to buy a new part for everything on my computer? Would it be less expensive in the long run for me to take it to a PC shop to have them find out what's wrong with it?

Least expensive. Your warranty

All those seem like very new parts. Call the suppliers and ask if they'll exchange them.

Be aware that repairing your car is much the same problem. No tools means you may have to buy or borrow a tool. Break my tool and you bought it.

Some have to go to a repair shop.

I goofed and used quotes in the subject line. My subject line

had the [no more replies will be allowed] in quotes. I told you simply how to get around it. It's a glitch in the forum technology, that is easy to circumvent.

Also DO NOT use quotes in the subject line.

If you want to see many examples, of getting around the limit, go to the Speakeasy forum and you'll see threads with hundreds of posts.
