computer only starts after reset key

Jul 26, 2004 3:20PM PDT

When I first turn on the computer, the fan comes on and the hard drive starts but no beep. Only if I push the reset button then it starts up normally. Any suggestions?

Hard to say it is a power problem since most are shared between the two except actual power off/on.

Could be a heat problem (chip level), try removing panel sides and blow fan from outside through the case and see if it helps. If yes then it is a heat related issue.

Since things are shared it is difficult to fault the P/S unless it is just on the edge. Disconnect power from unneeded device(s) and see if that helps. If yes then perhaps a power supply.

Post more information about computer type, especially motherboard and perhaps more specific answers will follow.

What changed since this started happening.

How about some info on this system, age, motherboard, processor, what's in it.

You may not want to fix it.

The repair of this issue usually ranges from cheap to expensive. Here's the checklist from cheap to not so cheap.

1. CMOS Battery. Very few realize that after a few years, it can cause this issue. Cheap at under 5 bucks.
2. Power Supply. It ages and may have a hard time getting the voltages levels to rise faster enough. Can be from 9 bucks to 50 bucks. Still a cheap and easy item to replace.
3. Motherboard. The power up circuit is on the motherboard. This can be expensive from 50 to 500 bucks depending on many factors.

I left out one zero cost item. Open the case, remove the dust bunnies (power off please!) and then snug up cables, connections and push cards into their slots (gently!)

Hope this sheds some light on the situation.

Bob
