Resolved Question

Computer only boots in safe mode. (Avast ?)

Dec 29, 2014 11:26AM PST

Since using Avastclear to remove the program (for a clean install) my desktop pc will only boot in Safe Mode. Note because of screen resolution I can only see a part of most programs and unable to use system restore. In 'services' Avast start up type showing automatic and unable to stop. (now using laptop).

Computer is 32 bit Win XP pro SP3.

with thanks, Rich

XP's end of support means a lot of things go untested so we must be ready with out backups. Some won't so you mention a clean install. Why not do that next?

Step 7: Resetting safeboot in Windows XP

Use the following steps in XP to use the Microsoft configuration utility to see if the safeboot option is selected:
Click Start, Run, and type the following into the Open field: msconfig
Click the Boot.ini tab.
Remove the checkmark next to /Safeboot, if it is selected.
Click OK and restart the PC.
