Question

Computer not working

Mar 10, 2016 5:35PM PST

Hello!
My computer kept freezing at the login screen, and now it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking white bar after the Asus screen appears. The error code showed on my motherboard is AE.

Let me know if you need hardware information, I'm trying to dig it up now. I'm running on Windows 10.

Boot
Mar 10, 2016 6:13PM PST

I boot off of the SSD, but holy that's bad. How do you boot off of a CD, just put in a blank disc and stony to top of nor order? I'll disconnect and reconnect the cables now.

Try that.
Mar 10, 2016 6:34PM PST

I hope you read the priors. It's not an error in my readings but "information" that tells me the boot drive failed or some other drive faulted and well, time to try other boot media, drives, etc.

I did read your message, I've changed what I'm booting off of like my cd drive, ssd, and hdd in my bios settings, but I'm fairly new to some of this, and I haven't had any change in results, still the same black screen. I tried booting off of a windows 10 installation disc in an attempt to reinstall the operating system, but it would not work. I tried to use a blank cd, that also yielded no results.

I see the CPU had onboard graphics.

Since you are not getting a display, time to pull the GPU.

Keep reducing to less parts until it works. If you get down to just CPU+HSF, Motherboard, 1 stick RAM and no display, well you are looking at one or more of the bad parts.

I don't suspect the CMOS battery here but you can try a new one.

I went through and tested everything, when I booted off the hard drive the same problem with the blinking underscore on a black screen persisted, when I tried from the SSD the boot LED remained red and it would open up bios every time.

Blinking underscore. Last week

My brother's laptop did that. We salvaged files then did a fresh OS install. Had to wipe the drive clean first. That was not a hardware failure here.

It's rare to see folk install a bootable OS to both drives. Are you sure that the setup was supposed to boot?

How did you manage to salvage files?

We booted a live OS and copied them out.

The problem was not the GPU after testing.

Mar 10, 2016 6:34PM PST

I've been using this computer for around 4-5 months now without any issues except for the occasional freeze on the log in screen. Every now and the. I'd have to run safe mode or restore a previous state, but it wasn't anything serious. ThE freezing at log in started after a software download for a Logitech mouse and a windows update, while the back screen with the white blinking underscore bar started after a power surge. From what I'm reading it's an operating system or boot problem, which makes no sense to me. I've tried using a new windows 10 CD with no success as well.

Answer
Which brand of SSD Do you have installed?
Mar 12, 2016 7:25AM PST

Some of the SSD's do require driver being installed in boot.wim. There is a possibility the SSD driver got corrupted. Did you made any changes for bio for harddrive settings??

Current status
Mar 13, 2016 10:35AM PDT

If i boot off of SSD I am returned to the bios screen. If I boot off of the HDD I am sent to a black screen with a blinking white underscore. If I boot off of a windows 10 installation disc it doesn't let me do anything because "the drive containing windows is locked".
