Most most monitors (since more than 10 years), if they notice they don't get a signal from the computer any more, show a message like "No signal" and turn into a low power stand-by state. Physically turning off with the power off button can even lower the power used.

Since all monitors are different, even from the same manufacturer, check the user manual if this is automatic, or if you somehow have to enable it in the monitor menu.

More information needed.

The make, model of the monitor and how the monitor is connected.

Also, I have run into folk using TVs and those often do not shut down on loss of signal so again why this detail is required.

Go to Control Panel, click on Personalization, and then click on Screen Saver at the bottom right. Make sure the setting is set to None. Sometimes if the screen saver is set to Blank and the wait time is 15 minutes, it'll look like your screen has turned off.

Should be something in there that you can set how long it goes without a signal before it powers off. My Vizio has such and it's a TV.
