computer locks up when downloading a pdf

Dec 1, 2009 11:14PM PST

I have a new computer with windows vista and when I try to download a pdf file from an email the download window starts but never finishes. It locks up at 1% complete every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Robert

Not very clear.

Please tell what kind of email you use: webmail (from your browser) or pop3/imap mail (from a mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird).

Then it's not clear what exactly you mean with 'download'. So please do the following.
1. Store the attachment on your own hard disk. Note the size. This should work, because such storing ("downloading") isn't dependent on the file size.
2. Run your pdf-viewer (Adobe Reader or Foxit reader or whatever you use). Use File>Open to open the saved attachment. What happens?
3. Go into My Computer or Windows Explorer, browse to the folder where you stored the file and doubleclick. What happens?

My yahoo or msn email. I think that is what you mean by browser/webmail? I have tried to do a "save attachment as" and created a folder on the HD and as soon as the copying or download starts it will not finish. The download file attachment dialog box starts and freezes at 1% complete. I tried a click and drag of the file to the folder and that resulted in a copy of the whole email itself.

If I were to guess.

This would be an EMAIL VIRUS SCANNER or the PDF SOFTWARE issue.

I'd start by uninstalling the PDF software and re-test.
