computer locks up during deep virus scan

My computer locks up when nearing the end of a deep virus scan. It never did before I installed a new graphics card.It's locking up earlier each time I try to complete a scan.Out of 6 tries I was finally able to complete the scan, it took 26 hours. OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional

1. Remove the case cover and retest.
2. If 1 fails, install just one stick of RAM and retest.

Thank you for your help! I tracked it down to my Nvidia Ge Force 8600 GT. I started receiving an error message that a display driver was having problems and had to close. So I tracked it down on the web. Nvidia is in process of exchanging it for new. Thank you again.
