Question

Computer keeps randomly losing power?

Aug 29, 2013 7:17AM PDT

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could offer some advice. I recently added some RAM and an SSD to my tower desktop running Windows 8. For a couple of weeks I had no big problems, then I opened it up again to check if there was space for a wireless network card (there is, just about), without actually unplugging anything, and suddenly the PC loses power (as if the wire it unplugged) very regularly if it hasn't been in use for a long time. For example, if I turn it off overnight, the next day it will crash before even reaching the login page. Then, when I try to reboot, it will crash even faster. At this power I flick the power switch at the rear of the PC off and on again, and try again - eventually I get it up and running but even then it has turned off after half an hour of use.

I've read various things online, it could be the CPU overheating (CPU is only an old Core 2 Duo, I'm looking to replace soon) or a problem with the PSU (which has already been replaced within the last 3 years). Other suggestions include broken fan (which I've yet to test), dust issues and faulty capacitors.

Do you have any opinion on what might be causing this? It's been happening for the last few days, since last opening up the PC.

Thanks very much for any advice you can offer.

Oli

Did you try the old

Try the old ideas about leaving the cover off and testing if that old heatsink issue has bit you. That model is found too often without all four retainer pins in place, and locked down.
