I would like to output MP3 music to my home speakers. Can I connect computer directly to my amplifier and play or will I need a pre-amp?

You failed to mention if you are connecting your computer to your home speaker amplifier or connecting an iPod or something else.

It depends upon what type of amplifier you are using.
Most have a built-in preamplifier.
Some more elaborate home stereo systems have a separate preamplifier.

Plug it in and see if it works.

All you need is a wire with the correct plugs on the ends for your two pieces of equipment. Most likely RCA type on the sterio and 1/8 inch sterio on the computer side.

Use the audio out on your pc and an aux in on the sterio.

A quick trip to Radio Shack is all you should need.
