Resolved Question

Computer issues

Aug 3, 2018 1:32PM PDT

Hello,

I have a sony vaio sve14a27cxh. 1 TB hard drive and 8 GB memory. It has the windows 10 operating system. Not sure all of what's in it but I do know it has the Intel and AMD processors. About 6 months ago it started to freeze every so often and would never come out of it short of just hitting the power button. I know that's not good. It got bad enough that about 15 minutes after turning the computer on it would lock up. I noticed the disk drive is at 100% usage. So I did a complete clean install of windows, hoping that would fix the problem to no avail. It's still freezing and the disk is still being used at 100% with only about 10MB actually being used. What could be wrong? Is it hardware or possibly software? Or do I just need a new one? TIA!

Kim

Speccy reading. The HDD looks OK.

1. https://www.cnet.com/products/wd-blue-wd10jpvt-hard-drive-1-tb-sata-300-series/specs/ shows a pretty sluggish HDD. It's only 5400 RPM and these do get a lot of complaints as W10 shares with others, updates. Let's turn that off.

2. Turn off Update Sharing. Read https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

Why? Sluggish drive and this is going to make it too busy.

3. The CPU is at 70C (up to 76C on one core later. ) That's a bit warm. Watch YouTube videos on how to use canned air to the vents. I would NOT open the laptop up just yet. Just power off, pull battery and do the canned air to the vents for starters.

4. AVAST is also probably scanning the entire drive. Until it finishes it will be slow because, read item 1.

The fix for this one may be to have the HDD removed and a SSD installed. Or try it without Avast. Use Defender for now.

I turned off the sharing option and will look into just replacing the hard drive. Thank you so much for the info as I only know enough to get my self into trouble!

That's often a sign of a failing HDD.
