Computer "Humming" sound

Mar 21, 2004 6:36AM PST

Everytime my computer comes on, it makes this "humming" sound from the computer and doesn't go away until the computer falls asleep. at first, I thought it was just the computer running the programs and such, but it's a little loud and annoying. Anybody know what that is and how I can make it go away? Hope this doesn't end up as a stupid question. Thanks

Here is a possiblity or two to look into. The humming could be several things, but the most likely may be either a loose case fan which is real simple to solve, it could be a loose component of some type, the most common humming sound is a Hard drive going bad....Hope this helps

Sounds are always a result of some moving part. Programs have none as far as I know.

Open your box and look for any cooling fans which might be the source. Put a finger on the hard drive and feel the vibration if you can.

In some cases a humming sound is simply vibration being transmitted through loose joints in the case. Just a sign of aging, we all get a little creaky.

I would suggest taking the lid off and see if it is your fans making the noise, CPU & Case fans will be inside, and the Power Supply fan will be visible from the back of the case. The Power Supply fan particularly will be slowed down when the PC falls asleep. As for the internal fans, try stopping them with your finger for a couple of seconds and see if the noise stops. If it is these then a blast with a can of Air Duster will fix them most of the time.
