Question

Computer help /maintenance

Mar 3, 2016 5:35AM PST

I have been having problem logging into Norton to add my daughter's computer to that coverage. I called the norton support line. They installed software on my dell inspiron laptop so they could check the computer. They said a lot of things were not working on it and was open & vulnerable to attack and could crash. But they said what it would cost for them to fix it. Lowest amount was $179. I have Norton and ad-aware on it. Is there a free-low priced program i could get that would scan and fix the issues it has?

I would suggest Linux.

As for Windows and Norton's, it seems that help program is aimed at drumming up more cash business for them.

That socalled "Norton support" most probably is a scam. We routinely delete all posts advertising such support phone numbers, so people don't get them from our forums. But they advertise elsewhere also, alas.
Uninstall what they installed as soon as you can!

I'd install a free antivirus like Avira, AVG or Avast. Be sure you install the free version, not a trial version that you have to pay for later. The link for AVG is difficult to find; it's http://free.avg.com; for Avira and Avast it's easier.
