Computer Freezing/Hanging

Sep 28, 2018 5:17PM PDT

A few times this week my PC has frozen at random points - either during a YouTube video or in the middle of a game.

Anyone tell me the reason why?

Here's my Speccy Link - http://speccy.piriform.com/results/JlRvVNncb0vP3zLETx0TiMx

To answer the first question that may be asked, the GTX 1080 Ti has 11GB VRAM - the 3GB shown is a known issue with Speccy.

Turn off xmp and test.

If your doing any other OCing bring it back to stock.

Your ssd is showing internal faults.

Post the make and model of your psu.

I've disabled XMP.

My PSU is the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G3 Power Supply

Nice PSU. Single rail.

Always check my results but this PSU looks fine.

If any drives have high values in 01 or 07 and a few others it's usually in the shop because the owner is complaining about delays, hangs to outright BSODs. That's a known problem area to check in the Speccy. If I see anything else not mentioned I'll post another reply.

No overclocking for now.

Can anything be done about the High Values in 01 or 07?

Is there a specific brand of SSD that develops this problem more than others?

- Collapse -
Yes. The drive is replaced.

There is no reset to those values. Sort of like an odometer.

I have a longer reply below with other ideas but for now I'd watch these values and Speccy it again in a few days to see if it's getting worse.

Found things. A Speccy reading.

1. Driver Booster. Sorry folk but a great way to introduce issues. Drivers do not wear out. If you have a working set of drivers, do not update without good reason. I use the maker for drivers. More at:
https://www.howtogeek.com/233115/the-only-way-to-safely-update-your-hardware-drivers-on-windows/
See the note there about driver updater apps.

2. The SSD is showing something. Not out of sight numbers but get the maker's test tool and see what it says for health. If you have a shiny new SATA cable I'd try that too.

The smart values are not that great. Many values would have me watching these numbers and see if they are moving.

If you have current backups go ahead and run CHKDSK C: /F /R /X when you have hours to spare.

3. Be sure to turn this off:
https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/
This helps in disk use and more.

4. The CPU Vcore is, to me a tad low. I'd get it to just a notch over 1.0V
This is kicked around a lot but 1.0V is far below the max so to cover possible CPU lockups I'd get this up a notch. Do not exceed 1.3V noted at http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3083420/6600k-stock-voltage-overclock-question.html

Update
Sep 29, 2018 10:01AM PDT

I've uninstalled Driver Booster.

Kingston SSD Manager is showing me that the SSD Healthly, the Life remaining is at 90% but every other value is reading healthy.

I had already disabled windows 10 from uploading updates over the internet.

Quick Question - How do I increase the voltage in the CPU? I know it's through the BIOS but I'd like a step by step if possible.

Watch the SSD numbers.

And my thought is get a shiny new short SATA cable on it. Some folk go get 3 feet cables and find out why we keep them short. What comes in the motherboard box is 99.9999% of the time just fine.

W10 update system. I can't tell if it's off in the report but when I see a few too many IP connections I note this setting. It could be Avast there? Off is the good setting.

As to the voltage I am not able to give a step by step since I don't own this model. I can only guide. That is, it's under 1.0 so you change it in the smallest increment and retest. I've seen cranky PCs sit up and start working fine with this adjustment. Far cheaper than a new motherboard or CPU.

IP Connections
Sep 29, 2018 10:30AM PDT

Could it be possible the IP connections are related to the VPN I had installed in Google Chrome?

I've uninstalled Google Chrome since I had no real need for it anymore, I primarily use Mozilla Firefox

Oops.

I didn't check for a VPN. Must have missed it. Just did a search for VPN in the report so maybe it's not in this report. There are more reports we can make but the Speccy does have a few areas that need watching and the CPU voltage that could stand a tweak up.

That's a nice number.

Good to see that. It's been one of my go to tweaks for machines that hang and has paid off a few too many times. Cheaper than a new motherboard.
