Question

Computer freezing in games, what do I do?

Oct 21, 2012 5:40AM PDT

Hello everyone,

I just recently built a desktop computer for gaming, and I've been having some issues. On some games (like Skyrim and Crysis) my computer will freeze and usually make a tearing/looping sound and I have to hard reset my computer. However, on some games (like Rage and L4D2) the computer will run just fine without any problems. I did a pass with memtest86+ and ran an Asus PC diagnostic and I haven't had much luck finding the problem. My temperatures seem okay as well, with my GPU running around 50-60C in game, and I checked with Core Temp that my CPU typically runs around 30-50C.

Here are my specs

Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz

HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

PSU: CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 V2 600W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

GPU: EVGA 015-P3-1480-KR GeForce GTX 480

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a million things on my plate, and I just want to be able to play some games to relax.

Yeah several people have told me my psu could be a bit better. I'll try some gaming later tonight with the side panel off and see what happens, and then I'll report back. Thanks.
