Question

Computer freezing

Oct 18, 2016 9:17AM PDT

All,
Recently my laptop has started to freeze up when I'm using it. It seems to only happen when I'm connected to the internet. By freeze up I mean that I cannot do anything with it. The mouse wont move, keypad doesn't work, I can't even bring up the task manager. I end up having to shutdown by pressing the power button. It's not overheating as I have it on a cooling pad and the laptop fan is working. I have done a scan with AVG (it found nothing), used CC cleaner, and defragged and nothing seems to have helped.

PLEASE help! Happy Thank you!

How about a Web Speccy report?

With that I can see if there's something running or hardware issues we can tackle.

Is this safe?

Is it safe/secure to do this? Not only my personal info as you can imagine, but I'm a photographer and need to be sure my images wouldn't some how be stolen or something by doing this...

It's a tool used

When folk don't have the time to give details. I guess you could factory reset the PC to see if that cures it.

What information was in the Speccy that made you ask? I don't see any sharing of pictures via this report and well, I apologize if I can't word this well but if you don't tell more, we're stuck with awful answers like reset/format the PC, get it repaired or replace it.

Thank you. I appreciate both your responses. I gave the best information I have for the issue I have been experiencing. Which is why I gave specifics on what it's been doing and what I have done to try and correct it.

Reloads, formatting and testing. I respect your privacy and let's hope someone can guess what it is without resorting to nuclear options.

If I had the Speccy report I can read and and comment what I find. But again, not happening so let's see what others guess.

HP or Compaq laptop?
Oct 18, 2016 11:49AM PDT

There's a common malady some have in the NVidia chip being too close to the CPU and the added heat loosening the connections on it, so sometimes it's working, sometimes not, especially after heating up again and separating from contact. Many have resorted to hot guns on the mother board, baking their motherboard, or the simplest involves bubble wrapping for a half or or two with it on to try and remelt solder around the video chip, etc.

Toshiba

No, it's a Toshiba about 5 years old I think. No issues other then slowness up to this point. I think the slowness has been due to lack of space.

Run the tool and look through the report.
If there is anything you don't want others to see don't post it.

They hid the gold. Well, they were running a torrent so they hid the one thing that would have answered why their internet was slow. Wasted everyone's time.

Don't post it

I meant the entire report not to edit the report and then post it.

It's either all or nothing.

That's my take on Speccy.

This is why I ask for the web report. That why I don't get burned over the members trying to hide a thing.

I will share it's been a great way to pop the hood and take the grand tour of a cranky PC.
