Yes, it could be. Let me share the bad news and something to try...
TRY! -> It's a Pentium 866 so it's a few years old and heat can be an issue. Try this. Pull the case cover, remove the dust bunnies and then point a small fan at machine internals. If that fixes it or makes it take longer then you are on the right track. Look for failed or clogged CPU and other fans.
The bad news is that Microsoft didn't offer a System File Checker (SFC) tool for Windows ME. The idea was that System Restore (SR) and System File Protection (SFP) made SFC obsolete. Sadly, the decision was made is the absence of reality.
Since there is no way to check system files, a reinstall of the OS is not uncommon. But my bet is on the dust bunnies.

What can I do to stop the computer freezing while I'm using the mouse. I may get 5 mins or 35 mins of usage before this happens. I can only switch off and restart.
I recently had to eliminate the worm "Netsky.D". Would that be part of the problem? I'm using a Pentium 111 866 CPU;Netcom Internal 56K PCI Modem; Asus CUV4X Soc370 M/B;MS Intelli Eye Explorer; Outlook Express; IE 6; Windows ME.
