Question

Computer Freezes When Cutting/Pasting in Favorites

Jul 8, 2013 5:08PM PDT

Hi,

When I add a link to my favorites, it won't save to a folder. Instead, I have to save it in the general section and then cut and paste into the folder.

However, when I do this the first time each day, the computer freezes and I have to end the program in the task manager. After that it seems to be ok.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Which Windows OS?

Which Favorites, ie the Favorites listed in Windows Explorer or the Favorites you select in Internet Explorer?

If you mean Windows Explorer Favorites then may be cutting/pasting is not the best method.

I don't use Windows Explorer favorites myself but the article in the link below seems to suggest other methods of adding to favorites;

Note where the article says you cannot save links to Windows Explorer Favorites.

Sorry, I usually state more information.

I'm running Windows 7 and IE10.

By "favorites" I meant favorites in IE.

I looked at your link and yes, that will be useful for future filing in Windows.

I hope this information will help.

for the further information.

My first thought is that explorer is faulting on a corrupt image or video file. I assume you are cutting/pasting using Windows Explorer into IE's Favorites folder whose path is; C:\Users\{UserName}\Favorites, and if so there is a known problem with Windows Explorer where files are viewed in Icon mode or similar and explorer attempts to render an image file or video file which is corrupted.

All Windows OSes use Explorer extensively throughout the OS, eg My Computer, My Documents, the Desktop is an Explorer app; even Open and Save dialogs, and also with IE's "Organise Favorites ", so any corrupted image or video file can cause Explorer to stall and stop responding.

If this is the case then the solution seems to be to remove the affected file, or set explorer to view files in List or Details mode for that folder.

I may not be right, and the fact that explorer only fails at the beginning of a session may point to some other cause.

May I ask, do you not use IE's own options to save links and organise them?

Further Clarification

Hi Mark,
"I assume you are cutting/pasting using Windows Explorer into IE's Favorites folder whose path is..."
"May I ask, do you not use IE's own options to save links and organise them?"
Actually I'm clicking on Favorites/Add to Favorites/Add, then I cut and paste into the desired folder. The reason I'm not scrolling the drop down and adding directly into an existing folder is because it works intermittently, which is very unreliable.
To clarify further with the freezing, when I right click the file that has been saved at the bottom of the favorites general folder, the hand icon takes on a mind of its own and starts moving around. After a few seconds a message appears in brackets next to the address bar saying (Not Responding). I then have to kill IE through task manager. When I open IE again it asks me do I want to restore the previous web pages.
I appreciate your help. I hope this extra info assists you further. If not, thanks for trying.
