Computer freezes on start-up and wake for 3-5 minutes

I've got a Sony VAIO F-Series laptop with 64-bit Windows 7 and I'm having a problem with the OS completely freezing up for 3-5 minutes upon start-up or waking up from sleep/hibernate. How can I check to see what is causing the problem and how to fix it?

How long have you been troubleshooting Windows?

This area is a deep one so before I write "look at the event viewer" it would be nice to know how many years you have been working with curing Windows ills. For example the first reply should not be what is the event viewer? This is not unlike wanting to change a part in a car and you don't know what a wrench is. At least with the internet you can research what a wrench is to avoid questions about tools.

If such research is unacceptable and you find that helping yourself is too much to ask, the usual fix is to restore the machine from its factory CDs then watch out in the future for things such as malware or "what you think can break it."

Microsoft has tried to ease the troubleshooting but it's still an advanced skill. You may want to skip all this and try GRIF'S ADVICE at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6121_102-0.html?threadID=378815&tag=forums06;forum-threads

Event Viewer

I'm not very experienced with tons of troubleshooting but if given directions, I'm sure I can do what I need to do to get it fixed.

So it happened again upon start-up. I ran the event viewer and came up with the following errors:

Source: VzCdbSvc (FYI this is a portion of the VAIO Multimedia package from what I've seen)
5:43:05 PM - Failed to load the plug-in module
4:43:05 PM - Failed to load the plug-in module

Source: Dhcp-Client
5:44:56 PM - Your computer was not assigned an address from the network for the Network Card with address (insert address). The following error occurred: 0x79.

Source: Service Control Manager
5:43:04 PM - A timeout was reached while waiting for the Roxio Upnp Server 10 service to connect.

I also received the following warnings:

5:43:01 PM - Detection of product '{ ~insert product number ~ }, feature 'DefaultFeature' failed during request for component '{ ~insert component number~ }'

5:43:01 PM - Detection of product '{ ~insert product number ~ }, feature 'DefaultFeature', component '{ ~insert component number~ } failed. The resource 'C:|Program Files (x86)\Corel\UpdateModule\' does not exist.

So the two warnings happen prior to the first error. What can you gather from this information?

I suggest using System Restore to when it worked. Many of those errors are not uncommon if the owner used a "Registry Cleaner" which the moderators here have learned to be a fine source of trouble.

1. The FIRST error regarding VzCdbSvc is a Sony issue. If it fails we get to ask Sony how to fix. Be prepared to use System Restore and my bet is they'll have you restore the entire machine back to its factory load.

-> This is not uncommon as today we don't get a full Windows 7 DVD so repairs are limited to what the maker has given us.

Bottom line? System Restore is our best option as it does not affect our files. Again, it does not and never has deleted any user file in a decade of use at the office and shop.

2. The DHCP item while interesting may mean nothing. I see that when I have WIFI and Ethernet. One of them should fail. This would be proper.

3. The MSI Installer is one we might be able to cure with some ease. RESEARCH THIS TOOL (google) -> "Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility"

Armed with that I can see what pending installs there are and remove the one that is failing. Sadly the exact entry is not evidenced in your post but this is the tool I'd use next.

REMEMBER THAT AS NORTON EXPIRES OR NEARS EXPIRATION, ODD THINGS LIKE THIS HAPPENS. Until Symantec addresses that I can't offer any advice than to avoid their products.

Freezing Windows

My Acer suffers from the same problem.
The screen wakes up, but it won't respond to any keyboard input for several minutes. I find if I leave Task Manager running, the problem disappears! (I left it running in the hope that it would show something).

Followed the instructions in that link you gave and "SuperAntiSpyware" detected malware in some s/w that I recently downloaded (Electronics Work Bench). Quarantined the file, etc, re-booted and it seems all is well. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.

Just an afterthought: I have both Spybot S&D and Adware running on this machine and they both failed to discover this problem.
Nor did AVG!

If you check the current advice from moderators you notice we don't suggest Spybot or Adaware. In fact I'd uninstall both to avoid some strange interaction issues I've seen over the past few years. Move up to MBAM (read Grif's advice.)

AVG is primarily your antivirus. 7 has a decent enough firewall so MBAM and SAS (see Grif's advice) are usually more than ample protection. But then again nothing beats a diligent user.
