Computer Freezes, and sluggish at times

I have a Gateway Desktop, running Windows XP( sorry do not have model #, I am at work right now) I have been experiencing a slow and sluggish computer, and was to to reformat my computer since it was purchased in '03. I did so and got everything back onto the computer, No games or extras, other than anti-virus(CA). I am still encountering these issues. I have noticed that my CPU Usages in Task Manager, Spikes to 100% often and I only had Firefox running. I am using very little of the hard Drive. Pl;ease help. I am not an expert( Obvious) at computers but know an average amount. If I need to give more info let me know.
