Computer does not shut off

Dell L667r, win98 2nd,
When I click Start-Shut Down- the computer goes through to shut down process until the -Windows Is Shutting Down- screen; where it stays until I manually press the Off button. Any ideas?

Hardly imaginable that somebody with Windows 98 nowadays is a 'newbie'. It's such an old OS already.

..please try the steps below:

First, if you haven't already, download and install the Windows 98 SE Shutdown Supplement from the link below:

Next, follow the steps in the links below to shut down all unnecessary startup programs and to clean out the junk files on the system:

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

When you're finished performing the steps in the links above, be sure to run Scandisk first, then Defrag.
