Question

Computer Disaster - SSD problems or more ?

Apr 25, 2017 2:17PM PDT

I got a massive issue with my computer, it was working fine until it blue screened today, after it happened i could no longer use steam (or any of the games via steam) and my graphics drivers wouldn't install, to make matters worse anything I downloaded would just say "this won't run on your pc"

It's come down to being the SSD i scanned it and it told me it needs repairing but every time i delete or uninstall something on my computer once it has restarted it acts like it never happened so i cannot even fix the SSD.

I tried using a windows media creation tool on my usb to put windows on my HDD instead but it wouldn't allow me as well as not letting me format my SSD to fix the issue.

Please help me I'm going insane

Clarification Request
I'd have to guess this runs W10.
Apr 25, 2017 2:21PM PDT

There's so much to cover that let's try a few things to salvage your installed and partially broken W10.

Step 1. CHKDSK /F/X all drives.
You may have to open an elevated command prompt to do this. (Plenty of articles about this and CHKDSK so I'll pause here.

Step 2. If the problems continue, try Windows 10 built in repair feature (Refresh.)
If that fails, use the RESET. (Files may go away with reset.)

step 1 - 2
Apr 25, 2017 2:31PM PDT

yes this is on windows 10 aha

I went through step 1 and at first it told me "access denied" so i went into system32 and ran it as admin, then typing the same command you gave me it says "CHDKSK is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program of batch file"

As for step 2 if you're referring to 'reset this pc' I have tried that, i was able to lunch steam at first but driver wouldn't update so i tried it again and now steam simply won't work, so i don't know where to go from there

Wrong command
Apr 25, 2017 2:57PM PDT

Try 'chkdsk'.

Got it
Apr 25, 2017 3:04PM PDT

I did the command - i got through to stage 2 but got two errors both "An unsoecified error occurred (696e647863686b2e 4d3)" and the other being "(6e74667363686b2e 1652)" as well as saying "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."

Another thing about the repair this pc, When trying to do so it goes through everything but then boots up like i never tried to do it, same with uninstalling and downloading things they either come back or dissapeared, i couldn't even use automatic repair

Answer
Let's take that STAGE 2 error and see if folk reported it.

Yeah I was reading it before i replied - i lack technical :)
Apr 25, 2017 3:16PM PDT

I did check just one disk and that was the C: which is the SSD which is the one being the problem (if i was able to install windows on my HDD i would just give up on the SSD and live without it for a while but it wouldn't let me do that and i'm not sure why both have space (SSD being only 10gb+ ish and the HDD having 1.5 TB)

I tried again
Apr 25, 2017 3:33PM PDT

i tried doing using the command CHKDSK c: again this time it came up with

Warning /F parameter not specified
running CHKDSK in read only mode

it then got to stage 3 and said there where no issues
carried on going and again failed to transfer log with status 50.

10GB? That could be why all this trouble.
Apr 25, 2017 3:39PM PDT

I installed W10 to an 120GB drive and when done had 99GB left. I don't know how you had it running on 10GB. It should halt and catch fire?

10GB? Too small.
Apr 25, 2017 3:35PM PDT

To install an OS to a drive that didn't have an OS is a bit of work. To start off, no files will survive except your backups. I will not explain deeply why as it won't fix why this is.

To install W10 to the drive of choice since CHKDSK and the resets failed, we need a BLANK NOT PARTIONED DRIVE.

Windows 10's install does let us (most of the time) delete the old partitions so when you get to the step where it asks you to select a drive, use the advanced option and delete all partitions, OK and then select that drive to install to.

Read https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1950-clean-install-windows-10-a.html and look how they delete partitions.

10GB on the SSD that has the OS
Apr 25, 2017 3:41PM PDT

The SSD has the OS on and is the cause of all this issue, it must have some kind of virus that wont let you change anything, cause it deletes anything i download and restores anything I delete upon restarting the computer

My HDD has a partition i think but i should be able to delete it (i was looking at this option earlier but i was hesitant because it has all my games on there and having to delete it all is just annoying :') but if it fixes the computer i will have to of course)

I have to be short about this.
Apr 25, 2017 3:43PM PDT

If you want to install an OS on a drive that didn't have an OS, you will get nothing but pain and failures. I do not want to write why this is.

How about tossing in a new drive and clone the 10GB to a reasonable 120GB or larger drive for the OS?

Crap
Apr 25, 2017 3:48PM PDT

All i have is my SSD and HDD that's all I have, I can't fix the issues with the SSD so the only thing to do would be to give the HDD the OS because when i try to delete the part from the SSD it does nothing Sad so i cannot create a new

- Collapse -
It's 120GB SSD
Apr 25, 2017 3:51PM PDT

It is a 120GB SSD but it only has that around 10GB space left

- Collapse -
Thanks for clarifying.
Apr 25, 2017 3:55PM PDT

Now you could do a clean install on that drive. I supplied a link about that.

Update
Apr 25, 2017 4:00PM PDT

I tried to delete Partition in this case for the SSD that has the OS on It's Drive 1 Partition 2 it didn't delete and said "windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk has an MBR partition table. on efi systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks" but this doesn't make sense because it has windows on it ?

Detail the steps.
Apr 25, 2017 4:03PM PDT

I can't guess how you tried this. You tell me.

- Collapse -
okay
Apr 25, 2017 4:09PM PDT

I followed the whole thing uptill step 12, everything was the same, I then clicked delete for the SSD Which has the OS and then would click new ? Might have done something wrong it's all so technical sorry if i'm a little frustrating

- Collapse -
Nope. Only delete. NEVER CLICK NEW!!!
Apr 25, 2017 4:30PM PDT

Windows 10's install only needs open space. If you want to learn why, just new it and learn why.

I think you are very close to fixing this.

Ssd
Apr 25, 2017 4:10PM PDT

Some ssd maker's have a tool box which has misc test you can run against the ssd.

You might want to unplug your hdd just to get it out of the mix

The 10GB of free space might be a problem.

Can you boot up a copy of linux and see if it will allow you to do some cleanup work on the ssd?

- Collapse -
Unfortunately not
Apr 25, 2017 4:16PM PDT

I don't have it on my computer and when ever I download things it just says It can't be used on this pc

Looking now it has 19GB of space but the next option is blanked out, I can do an upgrade with the SSD but that's it, it just says the same thing from the above reply , It won't format just gives off an error 0x80070057

Giving up
Apr 25, 2017 4:19PM PDT

I deleted everything on the HDD and am installing windows on that, It's basicly the same thing I did with the SSD when i got it but with it not working I don't have any options but to send it back as nothing is working as it's stuck in loops of everything and refuses to work
