Computer crashes when importing/viewing DV

Feb 11, 2006 5:16AM PST

When I try to import/view DV (or view current DV already imported) in Premier, Windows XP instantly crashes and displays a blue screen *when I close the Premier caputre window*. It can happen before I close the window too, but it doesn't happen as much.

I have no idea what's causing this. I've tried reinstalling Premier. Anyway, it's seriously pissing me off, so any help would be great!

I can't guess this one yet. Tell more.

It's been working without problems for months now. I don't remember isntalling anything new that could effect this.

I'm running an Asrock PE Pro motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.66Gz
512MB RAM
Windows XP Home Legit, SP2 critical updates
120GB Drive

Try...

What power supply? They do degrade and this is one of the signs. Hope it's 450 Watt or better.

Cleaning off the fans and heatsinks. Try without the case cover to sniff out heat issues.

You know, the fan has been making a funny sound when booting from rest. But how could an overheating problem cause the computer to crash predictably and routinely?

Thank you for your help though.

Can an "overheating problem cause the computer to crash predictably and routinely?"

You'll be surprised.

Oh, even seconds after opening a DV file? Thanks very much I'll really look into this.

Just a comment.

The machine may be old enough to require some dusting and cleaning. Any fans that are rattling, not spinning should be replaced. This is a maintenance item that some don't suspect until it could be a factor.

I noted how I sniff this out. Try it.

Thanks again for the extra detials. One thing that's confusing me though is that I can encode MP3 and video without this happening. Is there any particular reason why this may happen only with DV?

How's the cleaning and cover off test?

If you don't want to sniff that out, just write so. Some don't want to do that.

If so, it's time to look in the EVENT VIEWER to see if there is a clue.

It's no problem, it's just a slightly messy job and I'll need to buy a can of compressed air.

I found the Event Viewer in Windows and there wasn't anything on the crashes.

But I do remember some of the blue screens being:
BAD_POOL_HEADER
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Errors I see with a little too warm parts or a ram failure. Simply removing the case cover could give us a clue.

Takes but a few minutes. Worth a shot.

I cleaned the insides thoroughly. I even took off the heat sink and cleaned the fan blades. The error still instantly occurs.

I believe this is a software issue. I may have no choice but to either format, or create a partition and dual boot just for video editing.

God I hate Windows.

Fixed

I just remember that I used Windows Update to upgrade my Ac'97 drivers. I roled them back, and now everything is working fine (except WMP gives me the error "This pin cannot use the supplied media type.")

Well, at least it's not blue screening and I can import and edit video.

Thanks for all the help/adivce.

Note: I can still play DV in WMP - the error "This pin cannot use the supplied media type." only occurs when stopping, so it doesnt really matter.

WMP, an item I rarely use. Replacements?

1. Media Player Classic.

2. VLCPLAYER.

Both free and on google.

Microsoft is not the place to get drivers.

I bet this will not be forgotten...
