Computer Crashed when Windows Loads

Aug 1, 2007 10:41PM PDT

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
It gives me this blue screen after the windows splash screen, telling me that my hard drive wont load. It says to use chkdsk to fix the errors. However, I can't get into DOS to do this.

I tried pressing F8 when windows was loading, but the only DOS option was "SAfe Mode with Command Prompt", which must load up windows first and gives me the same crash error.

I tried using an MS-DOS boot disk (on a floppy) but it wouldn't allow me to select any drive other than the A: drive.

I really think that running a scandisk / chkdsk will fix the problem. Does anyone know how I can do this with my machine (Windows 2000).

Just fixed 2 like this (this week!)

The first one I booted the 2000 CD and made my way to the repair console (select the Repair option then the Console). I was able to run CHKDSK /P C: and that cured it.

The second one had more damage so I had to do the 2000 REPAIR INSTALL (SEE GOOGLE.COM).

I didn't lose any user files but had to reinstall the antivirus for that. The 2000 CD was booted and I selected install and it asked if I wanted to do a repair install and that was what I used.

Windows 2000 disk doesn't boot

I put the Windows 2000 CD into the computer and then restarted the computer. It never gave me the option to boot from the CD.

You'll want to fix that first.

That's widely discussed with notes about setting the BIOS to replacing the CD drive. Use those former discussions if you can't supply the fine details here.
