Computer crashed! Recovering & Opening .cpi and .mts files.

My computer crashed... I had about a year & 1/2 worth of AVCHD video clipson the software that was on my computer. I found a way to boot from a CDand view all of my files before I completely re-install Vista, but I was wondering:

But why chance it? Why not slip in a new HDD, install to that and put the old drive into some USB case?
