The first thing to do.

Find a friend or family member with an iPod and
1. Try your iPod on his PC.
2. Try his iPod on your PC.

If it's an issue with the PC (quite likely, but only sure after the above experiments), and it's a work PC, the IT-staff of your work should solve it.

i have connected te ipod to my wifes computer an it rcognises it, syncs and then immediately disconnects so i cant manage the music on there. also annoying.
i will test someone elses ipod on this machine and post the outcome.

i have reinstalled itunes a few times but i only got it this week so must be up to date.

If it syncs then you manage the music in iTunes that it synced with.

At least that's how it works on my pod.

sorry confused the issue.
it syncs with my wifes comuter which i do not have access to often. and even whne it does it disconnects as sson as the initial automatic sync is finished so i cant manage the content on it.

it will not even be recognised by my computer, (other than for that first couple of seconds in my computer).

"cant change as it is a work computer."

As we can't change the work computer my advice is now to take this up with your work's IT staff.
