Question

Computer building...first time and would like help?

Nov 27, 2011 7:31AM PST

I'm building my first computer and would like some help picking a motherboard and processor...I have a case already (looks pretty sick being red and black) with two slots for hard drives and CD/DVD-ROM drives.

Why build today?

There are fine ready to use machines that often give you more for the buck.

Hobby

My father built computers since he was a teenager, I've always been intrigued by the concept, and I now have the means to build a desktop myself. Also, I have had a request to build one for a family-member who doesn't have the means to get one himself. I enjoy the challenge it will present but I do need some help choosing what to use as there are so many choices out there to pick from.
In addition to this, knowing I accomplished the build myself and learning about the components more than I already do makes it more personal.

Fast forward to now.

You can move ahead once you set a budget but for me it's hard to ignore a ready to use machine with more for less bucks. If you really wanted to I guess you could take it apart and put it back together for the experience.

Budget
Nov 27, 2011 8:18AM PST

My budget is almost limitless (I get paid every two weeks and barely any bills to pay except cheap essentials)...I'm looking at one motherboard (Asus M4N68T-M V2 Motherboard Socket AM3, Micro ATX, nForce 630a, GeForce 7025 Graphics, SATA, RAID) that's reasonably priced with speed capabilities I like and possible RAM slots up to 16 GB. However, I haven't heard of RAID before.

So why the entry level machine?

We covered some basics but is this going to play any games? The 7025 is something to deliver Windows 7 AERO but not much more.

Games as well as Microsoft Office

It could possibly be used for playing games...what graphics I'm not entirely sure but I don't expect them to be high like WoW or GuildWars requires. It will mainly be used for internet research and schoolwork hence why I wasn't looking for an expensive, gaming motherboard (though I'm sure I'll need to find one for my own personal use eventually). If you recommend a motherboard that is better without an outrageous price, please tell me. Like I said originally, some of the terminology is unheard of to me such as RAID and overclocking (I looked it up and am still confused about it).

So what about a ready to use 8GB Quad Core 1TB machine?

Nice computer

Now THAT is a steal...I'll grab that computer and sell it for 500 to the family member (i don't do anything for free but at a disacounted price for family) then take the extra money and build my own desktop. Thanks for the link!!!!

Here's a good starting point...see link below.

Personally I like mid or full size cases .....plenty of space for building, expansion and air flow.

Lot of folks use Newegg.com to find components as they have good search tools, great selection, buyer reviews etc.,

Let us know how it turns out.

Links and personal experience

I see why people would like tomshardware and why people prefer newegg...Both my father and myself have used tiger direct and it seems to be similar to newegg. I decided on a motherboard and processor which has gotten great reviews thus far from buyers. I'll see if I can find the same products on newegg and read their reviews as well.
