Computer Boots But Nothing Works

Jul 5, 2007 1:20AM PDT

I am running Windows XP Home edition on an Acer Aspire AS5102WLMi.
I was on the comuter yesterday, I just checked my e-mail and then shut down the computer, when i came back on to program a game im working on...... I got this weird messege that had nothing clicked OK signed into my account, and nothing worked... All desktop shortcuts were labeled exaple "Windows Live Messenger.lnk" or "Warrock.lnk". Same with all start menu shortcuts. I tried running other programs, by going strait to there .exe files, and they wont work. I even tried .bat and they wont work either. The only programs i can open are one's assouciated with specific files, such as Adobe Photoshop, or Firefox, MS word........
Same thing happens in Safemode, I Managed to get Nod32 to scan the system, AVG antivirus, CCleaner, Disk Check.......... but nothing is detected..... Please help me(System restore did nothing to help) i cannot access the intenet, im using a live cd of Ubuntu in order to access the internet.

The first (and possibly only) ...

suggestion is to do a repair install (over the existing one) of Windows XP from your XP CD.

Not very likely to help, I'm afraid.

czech3, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you can't access the Internet use another computer to download it onto a floppy or CD and transfer it to the problem computer. If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

czech3, I'm glad to see that it worked and as to what caused it it's hard to say. I've seen this problem happen to some who use Ad-watch and allow the registry to be changed when prompted by Ad-watch and it also could be malware related or just a glitch.
