Question

computer asking to format card but it is already formated

Dec 12, 2011 4:49AM PST

I have a Canon Powershot A80 with a 256MB card. I took some pictures and went to upload with my card reader and now my computer is telling me that I need to format my card. I have used this same camera, card and card reader for ovver 3 years now and never has this happened before. I have rebooted my computer, reformatted the card in the camera and still, my computer tells me I need to format the card before uploading.....What is happening?

Answer
Before you lose too much time.

Try another card. Cards do wear out.

I tried the card that came with the camera and it says the same thing.....

That's not good.

Usually this means something has failed. Try the cards in another camera to sniff this out. Try the USB cable to the camera.

Try the card in other PCs.

Something missing from your story.

You never said if the card works with the camera.

If the card works with the camera, the problem is a defective card reader.
That camera uses a "compact flash" memory card.
It is possible that you have a bent/ broken pin inside the card reader.

I'll buy a new card reader and see if that is the problem......
