WMP (short for the app under discussion) does mention Conversion at
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/converting-files-before-sync-in-windows-media-player-frequently-asked-questions
Now that we know to use the word "Converting" instead of Compressing, I see we might be able to FORCE WMP to do this.

I've got a ton of MP3s that I want to export to a USB stick. For the life of me, I can't find a place in Windows Media Player to compress the audio when synching. iTunes has that feature and it's super convenient, but 1) I can't use the USB stick in iTunes, and 2) I can't find the compress feature in WMP, so I'm stuck. Anyone have any ideas?
