It may be possible that the installer overlooked turning the output on the cable box to a higher resolution (720 or 1080) for HD channels. You might try calling your content provider to see if they can walk you through the steps on how to do that over the phone.

When you say the cable guy hooked "everything up to this component", you mean the television, correct? Do you know if the input is composite (yellow, red, white), component (red blue green) or HDMI (looks like a wide skinny version of USB)?
