Compatible Processor Upgrade

Feb 18, 2010 3:58AM PST

I have a Dell DIMENSION DIM 3000 with an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.8GHz 2.79GHz, 1.25GB of RAM. I am running Windows XP Pro and Microsoft Office Pro.

Often my CPU is at 100%.

My questions are
1. Should I upgrade the processor?
2. What is the fastest compatible processor?

Re: CPU 100%

Most often, something is wrong (like malware or bad hardware) if you use 100% CPU. Sometimes it's caused by a legitimate program, for example if you do a CPU-intensive job like video or audio encoding.

In the first case having a faster CPU would only mean that it more useless work. Only in the second case would having a faster CPU make any sense.

So please tell more.

Compatible Processor Upgrade

Dear Kees,

Thank you so much for your willingness to help.

In this case, I am running intensive and or multiple applications. It does not run at 100% while few or no applications are open. It just peaks out very often while running multiple and intensive applications. It does drop back down when applications are idle or closed.

It really is not 100% necessary but I always like to be improving any situation I can or have the ability to improve. Therefore, if upgrading my processor would be an enhancement to my experience and worthwhile I would be interested in the details of determining compatibility.

Again, so nice to have folks like you, with the willingness and the knowledge to pass on.

Sincerely,

WM

There are the people who know about processors that are compatible with the 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4. This forum is about office software.
