Question

Compatibility of Canon XHA1S HDV camcorder with Macbook Pro

Aug 1, 2011 10:42PM PDT

I am looking to buy a good quality HDV camcorder, and have found that the Canon XHA1S is most suitable to my requirements. However I have a Macbook Pro - and I'm new to Apple products.
Can someone tell me if this camcorder would be compatible with the Macbook Pro

What does Canon say

What does Canon say about Mac support on the product page for that camcorder? Also, what did Canon's tech support people say when you asked them this same question?

All I can say is that you can probably be sure of at least some very basic support, essentially turning the camcorder into a mass storage device and copying files off. Whether or not you'll have any specialty software to try and make the process simpler will depend on the answers to the above questions.

This camera has a Firewire connection (IEEE1394)

which means it is almost certain that you will be able to plug the camera into your MBP and have iMovie fire up to suck the video off the camera, ready for editing.

Equally certain is the fact that any software supplied by Canon will NOT be compatible with your Mac. It will all be Windows based.

this from the Apple site regarding compatibility of camera's:

"iMovie '11 works with most Mini DV tape-based camcorders using DV and
HDV formats, which use a FireWire cable (also known as IEEE 1394 or
i.Link) to transfer video.
