Comparing Home Theater Systems

Feb 19, 2006 4:40AM PST

I'm comparing Home theater systems and started by looking at the Sony DAV-FX10 but found that you can't change bass and treble, however it has all the connections I need for VCR (which at this point I can't seem to part with), TV, MP3. Next I found the Onkyo HT S780 which seems much more flexible and would cover all my needs including my PS2 (defacto DVD player). Finally my search led me to the Onkyo HTS787C and I'm wondering if this all worth it or I should revert back to my original Sony thoughts...

YOU won't be pleased with the limitations.
Speakers are the most important part of your system.
Spend about the same as the HDTV.

THE rule of thumb was about 45% to 50% for speakers alone; of the total system.

NOW the rules have changed with the advent of home theatre.

1/3 for HDTV (more if you want a good-size Plasma)
1/3 for components (amp, receiver, DVD, etc.)
1/3 FOR SPEAKERS!!!.........Speakers are most important part of you set-up. They are the ONLY equipment your listening to. Crappy speakers will tend to make you think your HDTV sucks. Good shopping.

Bought a Sony recevier (stereo) this weekend because it just seems a bit daunting at this time, the whole home theater thing. Don't have the space to set-up an entire package now anyway and I would want real speakers as opposed to those little plastic seeming jobbies. Also took apart my old receiver and found that I probably just blew a fuse (replaceable at that) on the red, however not sure how much lukc I'll having finding that fuse... Guess the older technology was built to last Happy

I agree, I usualy said 60% for the seakers, over the years the difference in sound between different amps has become harder and harder to haer. But you can easly hear the difference between sperkers.
You didn't say what your budget is??? If it's $500 or more don't get a boxed system, pick your own. John
