Question

Comparing 2 Laptops?

Mar 9, 2017 8:02AM PST

Hello,

I just noticed on Newegg today that there’s a sale on an MSI gaming laptop that appears to be a steal. I was hoping someone could compare the specs of the 2 machines and tell me if they’re the same. From what I can see, they are. The only difference that I can find is that the MSI also has an SSD, and a $100 rebate? If so, this is a no brainer. However, the sale ends tomorrow, so I'll have to act fast if the specs truly are the same. I'm just concerned that I'm missing something. Thanks in advance.

Not the same

It's clear to me you have not used a machine with SSD so there it is. The one with SSD will win you over.

SSD

I own a machine with an SSD. However, that's not my question. I'm asking if the specs for the 2 machines are the same with the exception of the MSI having an SSD as well as a HDD. Clearly if the specs are equivalent and I'm not missing something, then the MSI would be the obvious choice. I'm simply trying to make sure that these 2 machines have the exact same specs before I purchase the MSI. I'm trying to avoid buyers remorse.

I agree so far.

I will give the nod to Asus since we got 5 years out of my sons first ROG and now in year 2 of his second ROG. Not too many MSI's around here.

Can you point out any other spec difference? I didn't find any.

Did you hit notebookcheck on those units?

I would just to check for display quality and HOT HOT HOT SPOTS.

Tough Decision

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I can't even find the model on notebookcheck. It seems every manufacturer has a model number, but then there are 10 iterations of that model. Even looking up a review of this exact machine seems impossible. I keep getting the top of the line iterations of the model with the GTX 1070. I don't know what to do... It's hard to deny essentially getting a free 128GB SSD, and $100 rebate for what appears to be the exact same specs. However, you bring up a good point about the screen. Can't find any info on it though.

What you find

Is that the maker will not change the screen unless it's a big change. That is, the 1080 screen is the same from one to another. And same for UHD.

I'd look for similar MSI/Asus with the CPU, GPU as the match and not worry about the HDD/SSD.

There are some units with hot spots that had me pass and keep shopping.

Good Thought

That's a good point. However, the CPU and GPU are the same for both the MSI and the ASUS. Not sure about the hot spots on the two. I'll see if I can find anything out in terms of the display.

Answer
READ THE PRODUCT REVIEWS.

The MSI ones repeat over and over AUDIO issues that you have to fix with a driver. At least it's just that. But why doesn't it arrive ready to use?

The ASUS reviews talk about HOT areas at the top of the keyboard even with a cooling pad.

In this round, even though I like the ROG unit, I think MSI gets the nod.
