Compare files on-line?

Jan 13, 2004 2:09AM PST

Hello,

I'm having another question concerned file comparison, I wonder if service exists that allows to compare text or files on-line.

For example, I paste two URLs or to texts from clipboard click button and some script runs to compare those texts?

If someone hear about such a service?

Thank you!

While quite feasible to implement, there isn't enough demand for such since local utilities exist in many forms.

Have you considered having such a web site constructed to do this?

I think that sometime it's handy to compare short texts on-line. For example I've found two product's descriptions or two versions of file on-line and instead of using some compare utility I go to web-site and paste two text from the clipboard.

Well, for example altavista.com has a translation service, and it's handy when you want to translate some page from French to English. Or when there is no translation software installed on your PC -- just go on-line to get function you need.

I've contacted guys from AKS, who released Compare Suite with the same question -- if there is any on-line comparative service that they know. And they told that it's very specific problem and they working now on some comparative service that woun't be just as their Compare Suite brought on-line, but some more convenient for web comparative strategy.

I'll keep an eye on their web-site to be try and betatest this service first by myself.

You can also use www.text-compare.com . I like it because you can just paste the texts which i usually already have open a anyway when i want to compare them. It highlights just the differences not just the whole line that contains a difference and it shows the files side by side which I think makes it easier to spot what's different where in which text. All in all a good diff tool.

In regards to you question yes there is free online file comparison web site www.comparemyfiles.com. This site lets you chose two files and it will compares them line by line for you. It is limited functionality being on the web but I have found it useful for a quick file compare tool. The best part is you don't have to download anything on your computer and it's free.
