Compaq Presario SR1124 shutting down

by wolfiejl / March 14, 2008 10:14 PM PDT

After hibernating for a while, my computer is shutting down as soon as I touch the mouse. Occasionally when I reboot, the screen is frozen. The green power light stays on but fizzles away the moment the mouse is moved. Grr. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does it do this

if you hit the space bar on the keyboard first? Moving the mouse is a way to wake up the computer out of hibernation. Tapping the keyboard (any key) also can be set to do this. Seems it is not coming out of hibernation correctly or not going to sleep correctly. Lots of possibilities. I would disable hybernation or make sure all the settings are correct for hybernation. Did this work before? Someone been in the BIOS recently or added a new mouse or other hardware, changed the boot oreder etc?

I'm pretty sure nothing happened at all when i hit the keyboard. I'll try it next time it happens. Last night it stayed on all night and didn't even hibernate. Wacky. I don't think anyone has made any changes or added any hardware. i'll let you know Happy

Well, it happened again last night. The green light was on but when i hit the space bar the same thing happened. as far as the hibernating settings, the monitor and hard drive are "never" supposed to turn off. I'm not sure if that's what you were referring to. I'm somewhat computer saavy but not so much when it comes to settings etc.

Power Options Properties Hibernate unclick enable hibernation

If it still does this its probably a heat problem and not hibernation. Open up the side and check all the fans, blow some air into it and see if it runs longer. If yes, its a cooling issue and probably shutting down due to temperature not sleep
