Compaq Presario 6000 goes in to stand by at boot up

I have a Compaq Presario 6000 with XP sp2. with ADM Athlon 2000+ with 256 DDR SDRAM memory. When I click to start up it goes to the Windows screen and starts to boot up and then it goes into standby. I then have to hold the start button in for about 5 seconds to make it cut off and then click again to start. I have to do this two are three times and then it will boot up normally. I have had to start putting in in standby at the end of the day to avoid this problem.I would greatly appreciate any help.....Mary
