Compaq Presario 2700 acting up

Hardware problem or infection?

My notebook all of a sudden has the fan running all the time amd the display is quite dim. I can still access my programs and everything seems to work normal but sometimes suddenly it shuts down. It can be in 5 minutes or 2 hours; does it look like a hardware or infection problem? Please help. Thanks.

Thanks Marianna, my display is back to bright, the fan is working full time when I do any of the scans but it does shut down when my computer is idle.

eabull,

In addition to Marianna's good suggestion....

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. We need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, plus anything else you think might help. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, your problem could be related to heat build-up in the machine, or possibly too many background programs running at start up. You might start by clicking on the link below and following the instructions in Parts 1-4. Shutting down the unnecessary start up programs, then running a disk cleanup will give us a good starting point. The instructions were designed for Windows ME/98 but can also be used with other operating systems.

Hope this helps.
